Biomedicine & Regenerative Biology

Biomedicine & Regenerative Biology is comprised of several highly interwoven research areas: from molecular to cellular and to organismal – all these life science research approaches strive to generate basic and translational scientific insights to benefit human health. Regeneration, the renewal of degenerated or lost cells, tissues or organs within an organism typically depends on the action of specific stem or progenitor cells capable to proliferate and differentiate into the required cell types. Many of the basic concepts foster approaches to develop regenerative therapies and a range of other biomedical areas. Basic research feeds into translational research, which extends into clinical trials and medical applications.

In Dresden we work on a range of fascinating research topics such as lipid and RNA biochemistry, biochemistry of the cell cycle, protein turnover and folding, immuno-biochemistry, molecular diabetology, biochemistry of chromosome-associated proteins and of adhesion proteins, polysaccharides, and biomatrices. In addition, we focus on mechanisms of regeneration and stem cell function. Diverse strategies are applied to dissect fundamental pathways of tissue regeneration, such as the directed differentiation of stem cells into specific cell types for cell replacement strategies for currently incurable diseases. Animals with high regenerative capacities illustrate intrinsic mechanisms of regeneration, modelling potential tissue repair in mammals. Prominent additional biomedical research areas in Dresden include immunology, metabolism, tumor biology, neuroscience, bone research, genomics, germ cell biology and more. We employ a wide range of tools to pursue our biomedical approaches, such as sophisticated mouse manipulation including humanized animal models, iPS and other stem cell technologies, molecular advances, and innovative screening technologies.
